Minimalistic yoga in Downtown Los Angeles.
I stumbled upon Trellis Fitness because my cousin works right next door. This studio is the epitome of minimalism, which is good if you like clean, borderline sterile environments. I took heated yoga from 7:45pm-8:45pm. I arrived at 7:30 and it looked like the studio was closed (lights off, front door locked). But, it was because the instructor was teaching the class before and there wasn’t a receptionist (they run lean). So, don’t be alarmed if you show up and it looks like no one is home.
I ended up getting a private lesson because no one else showed up to take class. Personally, I prefer a full class because a full room of yogis has much better energy than an empty one. Plus, it’s way more fun.
My instructor was nice, but I could tell she was a bit of a novice. The poses weren’t difficult (good for some, bad for others) which means it is a yoga style that is accessible to all (read: easy). No barrier to entry. There were no inversions and very few backbends. It was more of a flow – but a very simple, slow flow. They heated the room using portable space heaters, which to me felt like the poor mans version of heated yoga (compared to a place like Modo or Hot 8). I didn’t get the “heat” I was hoping for; on a scale of 1-10, the heat was at a 2.
I appreciate the space for what it is, but I don’t think I’ll be going back for yoga any time soon. They do, however, have a massage menu and offer pilates classes, as well. So I may go check them out for that.
Bonus: Church & State Bistro (http://churchandstatebistro.com) and Pour House Wine Bar (http://pourhauswinebar.com) are on the same block, so you can pop into either one and make it a yoga/dinner experience kinda night.
To recap:
Pros: Clean space, friendly staff, nice environment, easy parking, no need to sign up beforehand, first class free!
Cons: No showers, empty class, not very difficult, not spiritual, felt rushed.
